Functional network antagonism and consciousness

چکیده
Abstract Spontaneous brain activity changes across states of consciousness. A particular consciousness-mediated configuration is the anticorrelations between default mode network and other regions. What this antagonistic organization implies about consciousness to date remains inconclusive. In Perspective Article, we propose that are physiological expression concept segregation, namely brain’s capacity show selectivity in way areas will be functionally connected. We postulate effect mediated by process neural inhibition, regulating global local inhibitory activity. While recognizing can also result from mechanisms, inhibition helps understanding how metastability affected after disrupting balance. combination with relevant theories consciousness, suggest a prior work as marker preserved predict if not state host anticorrelations, then most likely individual does entertain subjective experience. believe link underlying physiology help only comprehend happens, but conceptualize effective interventions for treating disorders which seem particularly affected.

Consciousness & the small network argument
The last decade has experienced a vivid enthusiasm to unravel the mystery of consciousness believed to be one of the major puzzles of human kind. We share this enthusiasm. Still, we feel that current models are incomplete suffering from a problem that we call the "small network argument".
متن کاملThe brain network reflecting bodily self-consciousness: a functional connectivity study.
Several brain regions are important for processing self-location and first-person perspective, two important aspects of bodily self-consciousness. However, the interplay between these regions has not been clarified. In addition, while self-location and first-person perspective in healthy subjects are associated with bilateral activity in temporoparietal junction (TPJ), disturbed self-location a...
متن کاملFunctional neuroanatomy of disorders of consciousness.
Our understanding of the mechanisms of loss and recovery of consciousness, following severe brain injury or during anesthesia, is changing rapidly. Recent neuroimaging studies have shown that patients with chronic disorders of consciousness and subjects undergoing general anesthesia present a complex dysfunctionality in the architecture of brain connectivity. At present, the global hallmark of ...
متن کاملFunctional neuroimaging of disorders of consciousness.
An accurate and reliable evaluation of the level and content of cognitive processing is of paramount importance for the appropriate management of severely brain-damaged patients with disorders of consciousness.1 Objective behavioral assessment of residual cognitive function can be extremely challenging in these patients, as motor responses may be minimal, inconsistent, and difficult to document...
متن کاملFunctional cross-antagonism between transcription factors FLI-1 and EKLF.
FLI-1 is an ETS family transcription factor which is overexpressed in Friend erythroleukemia and contributes to the blockage of differentiation of erythroleukemic cells. We show here that FLI-1 represses the transcriptional activity of the beta-globin gene promoter in MEL cells and interacts with two of its critical transactivators, GATA-1 and EKLF. Unexpectedly, FLI-1 enhances the stimulating ...
